Requiremetns and Procedures for International Travel 2026

The import permit is required under Vietnamese law. However, in practice, customs officials often do not request this document, and in many cases no documentation check is carried out. As a result, many travelers have successfully brought their pets into Vietnam without obtaining an import permit.

Ultimately, the decision on how to proceed is yours; our responsibility is to advise you on the correct and compliant way to handle the import process.

Overview:

Before entering Vietnam, your pet must have the following:

  • Microchip (ISO Standard, alternative microchips are acceptable if you have your own microchip reader)

  • Vaccinations against Rabies

  • Core dog DHPPI Lepto / cat vaccines FVRCP (recommended by us, but not mandatory)

  • Parasite Treatment (recommended by us, not mandatory)

  • Government Veterinary International Health Certificate to fly from country of departure – ENDORSED BY GOVERNMENT VET OFFICIAL (mandatory)

  • Import Permit Application Form for Pets Entering Vietnam, endorsed by the authorities

Microchip (ISO Standard)

Your pet must be microchipped for identification purposes and must be microchipped before or at the same time as the rabies vaccine.

  • The microchip is injected under your pet’s skin near their left shoulder blade
  • This is not a tracking device, but is a way to identify and register your dog/cat

Rabies and Core (FVRCP for cats and DHPPI Lepto for dogs) Vaccines

  • Pets must be at least 3 months of age to receive a rabies vaccination.

  • In some cases, Vietnam does honor a 3-year rabies vaccination as long as the validity period of the vaccine is clearly indicated on the vaccination certificate or the Health Certificate for Export endorsed by the authorities of the original country.

  • Core vaccines for dogs (DHPPI Lepto) and cats (FVRCP) are strongly recommended but not mandatory.

Parasite treatment  (recommended but not mandatory)

Before your pet enters Vietnam, it is recommended to be treated against internal and external parasites by a licensed veterinarian 1-5 days before entering the country.

NOTE: Antiparasitic treatment is not mandatory, but it’s recommended.

Certificates

Government International Health Certificate (Export document from the departing country)

Must be completed 5-10 days before departure and sent to us (scan via email). Document must be endorsed by the local veterinary government in the departing country (city)

Import Application and Import Permit for Pets Entering Vietnam

This document is done at the government office by our team.
In order to get it, we will need the following information sent to us via email:

  • Flight ticket
  • Pet vaccine booklet scan with a valid Rabies Vaccine and ISO standard microchip
  • Passport of the guardian/owner entering Vietnam
  • Export health certificate from the departing country endorsed by a government vet
  • Address in the departing country, and address in Vietnam.

Once the owner arrives, we will require the original export document, which must be a health certificate endorsed by the government veterinarian from the departing country. Additionally, we will need to take the pet to the government office to complete the registration process and collect the original import permit.

For safety reasons, we provide transportation to the government office using a clinic van or car; we never transport pets via motorbike. Please be aware that this procedure typically requires an entire morning to complete, and there is no way to bypass this requirement. You may choose to accompany us for the visit, or you can leave your pet in our care and we will contact you as soon as the process is finished.

The Da Nang local government will keep one copy of the original health certificate/export permit from the exporting country as part of the file and WILL NOT return it for any reason. We encourage you to apply for another copy if you wish to have one.
